Why Take This Course?
What UX designers hand off to UI designers and developers always has words in it: headings, instructions, calls to action, error messages, and more. So, if you've ever thought to yourself: "Which button do I press?" or "What does ‘system error 129x’ mean?" then you’ve been a victim of less-than-stellar UX writing. Yes, there actually is an art and science to writing navigation, calls-to-action, and instructional copy — and learning how to write that kind of copy for clarity and creating happy users is the focus of this hands-on, portfolio-boosting class. In short, it’s a class where you'll learn to write for doing, not just reading

Course Description
This course will take a deep dive into the fundamentals and best practices of content design and UX writing, starting with deconstructing the experience flow of a website or app. Since this is very much a writing practice class, we'll do weekly assignments, critique and discuss each other's work, and help you create some stellar new samples for your portfolio as we cover these topics and more:

  • Principles of conversational design

  • The need for audience analysis before writing

  • Golden paths and dashboards

  • Writing strings and microcopy for UI controls

  • Best practices for error messages and empty states

  • Writing for localization
