Why Take This Course?
The quick answer is: This course is for anyone working with digital or print design who would like a better understanding of the fundamentals of typography.

The better, longer answer is: How often do we put an instructor’s name in the course title? That would be, “never.” But that’s also the answer to this question: “When will you get another chance to study typography from one of the most knowledgeable, experienced, fun, and enthusiastic pros when it comes to the almighty letterform?”

Typography, as you might imagine, is at the center of all great digital and analog design. So learning the basics isn’t just a nice idea, it’s (as the course title says) essential.

To further encourage you to join us, here’s what some of Jeff’s past students have said about him and this class:

  • So hyped on type! Really fun learning from someone who is both skilled and passionate.

  • Jeff is super knowledgeable and extremely fun to learn from.

  • I cannot sing high enough praises for Jeff Barlow. His knowledge is vast and is always willing to go the extra mile to help a student

  • Jeff did a good job giving feedback that was actionable, and greatly improved the work. I would seriously consider taking another class from him.

Course Description
Through a combination of lecture, discussion, in-class exercises, and homework assignments (expect to spend at least three hours per week outside of class — seriously), we’ll tackle this big, lovable topic by dissecting typography into its various forms:

  • The Letter: Type anatomy, classification, font identification

  • The Word: Type choice based on meaning

  • The Sentence:  Using type choice and hierarchy to add meaning to the copy

  • The Paragraph: Leading, tracking, alignment, color, justification, and rags

  • The System:  Grid, hierarchy, concept, and commanding large areas of text

  • The Platform: Knowing how to handle type on a screen vs. type on paper
