Intro to Building
Web Sites
Note:
This is a general guide to material that may be covered. Each instructor
may cover these subjects in different order and with a different degree
of emphasis.
Objectives:
To provide introductory
instruction in HTML for those who intend to learn more about programming
web pages, or want a basic understanding to aid their jobs as they concept
and design web sites
To provide an
overview of how the web works, the concepts behind browsers, bandwidth,
image optimization and FTP
Prerequisites:
None
Week One
Components of a basic HTML document, tags
File structure, including relative
vs. absolute file names, and other naming conventions
Editors and web authoring tools
Exercise: Building a simple web page
Week
Two
HTML tables and how they can be used to create interesting layouts,
H yperlinks
Exercise: Creating and linking
multiple pages
Week Three
How to optimize graphics for
faster downloading
Exercise: Adding graphics to
a web page
Image preparation software for the web, (Adobe PhotoShop & ImageReady
and Macromedia Fireworks)
Site Maintenance – Structure of your site, uploading to a server,
updating it after it has been built and deployed
Week
Four
Frames – Advantages, disadvantages, how to create
Exercise: Building frames and no frames versions of sites
Week Five
Advanced technologies
– Overview of JavaScript, DHTML, CSS, CGI, and ASP (We
won’t be actually building anything using these, but we will look
at examples of each, so it will be clear what they all do.)
Exercise: Build a ‘real’ website including
• A logo or title graphic
• A home/start page
• Some secondary pages
• Contact page
