Color is one of the mightiest tools in a designer’s bag, but it can also be among the trickiest to use well. Color perception is subjective, but communication about color must be exact. In this course, start to develop a discriminating eye for color choice and practice communicating about color with confidence. We begin with an introduction to the major color systems, color vocabulary, and the physics of light and color perception. On the abstract side, we will cover the psychology of colors, their historical and cultural symbolism, and the evolution of color trends in design. On the concrete side, we will practice talking about color: with clients, with fellow designers, and with printers. We will work to hone skills that make us better designers – building our base of experience through hands-on exploration of color media.
If you’re a graphic design, web design, or advertising art direction student or professional, this class is where you’ll learn the fundamentals of color.
